Title
Souvenir photograph Villa Hügel 1961
Description
A black and white souvenir photograph taken in front of the Villa Hügel of competitors, organizers and staff who took part in the 1961 competition in Duisburg, Germany.
The photograph was taken on 12 July at an afternoon coffee reception held in honour of the attendees. The photo was presented in a paper cover to all those who attended.
While they waited for results, competitors were taken on several organized day trips many centered on emphasizing Germany’s post-war recovery and industrial might. On this occasion, the excursion was to the Krupp Works’ foundry and forging shop. Krupp Works was one of the world’s largest steelmakers and arms manufacturers until the end of the Second World War. After the war it became an important manufacturer of industrial machinery and materials and instrumental in Germany’s economic growth. The Villa Hügel was owned by the Krupp family until 1945 after which it became a centre for art exhibitions. After the coffee reception attendees were given a tour of the exhibition about ancient Egyptian art.
