Letter from woodworkers' union to Donal Cooper, 23/04/1963 Letter from woodworkers' union to Donal Cooper, 23/04/1963 (photocopy) Subject: A congratulatory letter and invitation to Donal Cooper from the Amalgamated Society of Woodworkers, a trade union Following his win in the junior joinery category at Gijon the previous year, the young Irish apprentice received a letter from the London-based trade union informing him that he was gifted a tool chest, and invited to attend their annual conference in England where he was to be presented with the prize – all expenses paid. The “very fine prize” as it was described by the letter’s author, the union’s general secretary, contained tools worth 50 pounds – a great sum in those days. Such an honour was meant to encourage hard-working young apprentices at the beginning of their careers and provide incentives for others to take up the trade. -
Donal Cooper's telegram 1962 A photocopy of a telegram from an Irish competitor at the 1962 competition in Gijon, Spain. In 1962 Donal Cooper won in the junior joinery category and he sent this telegram to his employer back home in Ireland. Young Donal’s excitement is palpable in the brevity of his words: “I won ring home please – Donal.” -
