The Craftsman DVD containing the movie "The Craftsman", a colour film about the 12th International Trade Competition for Apprentices in Dublin, Ireland, in July 1963. The 29-minute film with a narrated voice over gives a chronological overview of the event from the competitors arriving at the airport to the closing ceremony. Among the skills shown are wood working, brick laying and welding. The nationalities shown are European and Asian. In addition to the competition itself, there is a lot of footage of Dublin, its surrounding countryside, official banquets and touristic excursions. Dublin 1963 was a major success: it was the largest skills competition to be held until that point and more than 200 apprentices from 13 countries took part. 100 observers also attended. -
Recollections of three British competitors at 1961 Duisburg A wide-ranging interview filmed in October 2019 with Leslie Woolley, Clive Barker and Michael Mothershaw who participated in the 1961 competition in Duisburg, Germany. The three were apprentices for the Michelin company in England at the time of the event and the recording was made at its headquarters. Woolley competed in gas welding, narrowly missing a bronze medal, by his account because he was not quick enough. All three were struck by the warmth of the welcome by the German people, despite reservations from their parents of residual hostility from the Second World War. Clive Barker competed in Barcelona 1960, placing third in oxyacetylene welding, and competed again in 1961. Michelin was an early enthusiast of the IVTO competitions, sending apprentices from 1959 to at least 1962. -
Footage of 1957 Competition This 400 foot canister of silent black and white film was sent to Fred Hill by Spain. The date says 1954, but the title inside says 1957, and the address label records it being sent to Fred Hill MBE suggesting after 1963. The title of the film is "Voluntad de resurgimiento", the Will of Resurgance, a Francoist slogan used for the first Spanish national competitions. The film is likely around 10 minutes long, and possibly a promotional/propaganda film for the contest. A note (scanned and attached) suggests that an attempt to transfer the film to video was made in 1986, but that this was unsuccessful because it was "too dark." Digitlized in 2020 -
