Plane
Definition
Hand tool used for shaping, smoothing, and levelling wood surfaces.
A typical woodworking plane consists of a flat sole (the bottom), a cutting blade or iron, and a handle or knob for gripping and applying pressure. The plane's sole is usually made of metal and is designed to be flat and smooth to allow it to glide over the surface of the wood being worked on. The blade, or iron, is positioned at an angle relative to the sole and is responsible for shaving off thin layers of wood to create a smooth and even surface.
