- Recollections of three British competitors at 1961 Duisburg
- Description
-
A wide-ranging interview filmed in October 2019 with Leslie Woolley, Clive Barker and Michael Mothershaw who participated in the 1961 competition in Duisburg, Germany.
The three were apprentices for the Michelin company in England at the time of the event and the recording was made at its headquarters. Woolley competed in gas welding, narrowly missing a bronze medal, by his account because he was not quick enough. All three were struck by the warmth of the welcome by the German people, despite reservations from their parents of residual hostility from the Second World War. Clive Barker competed in Barcelona 1960, placing third in oxyacetylene welding, and competed again in 1961.
Michelin was an early enthusiast of the IVTO competitions, sending apprentices from 1959 to at least 1962. - Date
