  • Dinner durinfg the 13th International Competiton in Lisbon
    Postcard created from a photograph of Fred Hill at a dinner in Portugal and sent to his wife. Hill refers to his fellow guests, the hot weather and his team of "28 boys." The card carries the words "Portugal 1965"* which is confusing, since the Portugal contest took place in 1964 and 1965 was Glasgow. It also carries a 1964 stamp. The wording and date are in the same handwriting and ink, suggesting an error on the part of Hill.

  • Commonwealth Technical Training Week
    The Duke of Edinburgh established 'Commonwealth Technical Training Week' and the inaugural meeting was held on Monday May 29 in the Guildhall, London. Brian Fuller (UK competitor for silversmithing) in Spain 1960 and later in Portugual, 1964 was one of the individuals selected to meet the Duke of Edinburgh at the Guildhall event. These are four pictures of the audience in Guildhall, London. Brian estimated 400-500 people attended.

    A black and white souvenir photograph taken in front of the Villa Hügel of competitors, organizers and staff who took part in the 1961 competition in Duisburg, Germany. The photograph was taken on 12 July at an afternoon coffee reception held in honour of the attendees. The photo was presented in a paper cover to all those who attended. While they waited for results, competitors were taken on several organized day trips many centered on emphasizing Germany’s post-war recovery and industrial might. On this occasion, the excursion was to the Krupp Works’ foundry and forging shop. Krupp Works was one of the world’s largest steelmakers and arms manufacturers until the end of the Second World War. After the war it became an important manufacturer of industrial machinery and materials and instrumental in Germany’s economic growth. The Villa Hügel was owned by the Krupp family until 1945 after which it became a centre for art exhibitions. After the coffee reception attendees were given a tour of the exhibition about ancient Egyptian art.
