  • UK team at 1968 Competition
    A black and white photograph of the UK team with Union Flag above the glacier at Zermatt, taken during one of the excursions typically organised in the early contents after the skills competition ended and while judging was taking place, a process that typically took around a week. This was the Bern competition. The photograph belonged to Fred Hill and carries his hand written description on the reverse. "Zermatt Switzerland July '68. British Team Raise the flag. After each competition all trams enjoy a week's cultural visit at the expense of the host country."

Standing in the front row, fourth from the left, is Silvia Felix of Switzerland who won gold in Cabinetmaking, the first woman to do so. Third from the right is Yvonne Brand, also of Switzerland, who took home the gold medal in Ladies’ Hairdressing. Brand and Felix took part at the second contest to feature female competitors since the IVTO amended its rules in 1964 allowing women to compete.

Felix who was 19-years-old at the time blazed a trail for women in skills having won first place in a category that was hitherto the preserve of men. On the podium is the silver medal winner, J.C.J. Michels of the Netherlands and the bronze medallist Iwahana Yukinobu, of Japan. Bern 1968 was only the second event to feature female competitors - women began competing at the international contests the previous year in Madrid.
