14th International Apprentice Competition, Glasgow 1965 Documents about the 1965 competition in Glasgow, Scotland. A typed summary gives a basic overview of dates, lists the 13 countries expected to take part, skill categories and the organizer The City of London Guilds and Institute. Glasgow was selected because of the “availability of suitable technical accommodation for the tests and of the hotel and hostel accommodation for the competitors.” Tools and equipment were provided by British manufacturers. Also included is a signed letter on Buckingham Palace letterhead from Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (b. 1921 - d. 2021) expressing his support as the event’s patron and noting that preparations were “well advanced.” The Prince was an advocate of vocational education. -

Voluntary organisations supported by Fred Hill This single sheet lists all the voluntary organisations supported by Fred Hill and which led to him being awarded a Member of the British Empire. Hill founded the UK team that took part for the first time in 1956. The typed list includes the International Apprentice Competition, as it was often called, but is of interest because it also mentions his support for the Union of Europe, an organisation supporting greater European unity, in the 1930s. It was this organisation that passed on invitations from Spain to the 1953 competition to a number of countries, including Germany. -

The author was John H Ireland, an instructor with the Steel Company of Wales. The document gives great detail of the UK's entry to the IVTO and competitions, including the work of Fred Hill and Arthur Emerson. Of interest is the revelation that the Spanish organisers contracted UK organisations about the 1953 competition but were ignored. It was only after he learned about it indirectly that Fred Hill decided to journey to Madrid with his son Doug. Hill's later attempts to involve British industry in the competition are also detailed. The paper then records the formation of the UK team and the assistance provided by City & Guilds and a small number of UK companies -

Hill received the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) a highly prestigious honour, in recognition of his services to the voluntary sector including the youth apprentice competitions. Hill was one of the founders of the International Vocational Training Organisation (IVTO) in 1956 and a major figure in the global skills movement. The award reflects his wide range of voluntary work. Fred Hill accompanied his son Doug to the 1953 competition in Madrid, making them the first British participants. Hill then organized and funded the first British team in 1956 and was a major figure in the creation of the IVTO, later working to bring new members to the organization.
