Letter from woodworkers' union to Donal Cooper, 23/04/1963
Letter from woodworkers' union to Donal Cooper, 23/04/1963 (photocopy) Subject: A congratulatory letter and invitation to Donal Cooper from the Amalgamated Society of Woodworkers, a trade union Following his win in the junior joinery category at Gijon the previous year, the young Irish apprentice received a letter from the London-based trade union informing him that he was gifted a tool chest, and invited to attend their annual conference in England where he was to be presented with the prize – all expenses paid. The “very fine prize” as it was described by the letter’s author, the union’s general secretary, contained tools worth 50 pounds – a great sum in those days. Such an honour was meant to encourage hard-working young apprentices at the beginning of their careers and provide incentives for others to take up the trade. -
