First Day Cover, Tokyo 1970
The envelope showing a ink drawing of a lathe operator, stamp and postmark are unique to the Competition. The postmark dated 45. 11. 10. is a sketch of the venue, the Budokan Arena. The last numbers refer to the month and day the competition began. 45 is the year under the Japanese nengo system, which begins anew under each emperor. In this instance, it is the 45th year of Emperor Hirohito, also known as the Showa era. An insert gives brief details of the event and the name of the female designer, Midori Masumi, in English and Japanese. Both the cover and insert are in mint condition. -
First Day Cover, Tokyo 1970
A First Day Cover issued to mark the 1970 competition in Chiba, near Tokyo, Japan. This was the first time the competition had been held in Japan and Asia. The envelope is affixed with a 15-Yen stamp of a silhouetted competitor inside the IVTO logo. The postmark, dated 45. 11. 10. is a sketch of the venue, the Budokan Arena. The last two numbers refer to the month and day of the competition, 45 is the year under the Japanese nengo system, which begins anew under each emperor. In this instance, this is the 45th year of Emperor Hirohito, also known as the Showa era. The envelope is notable for an engraved metallic plate featuring the same design as the stamp. Inside is a slip of paper printed with details of the competition in English and Japanese, the printing process, and the name of the stamp's designer, Miss Midori Masumi. Twenty-one million stamps went into circulation. -

In this instance, this is the 45th year of Emperor Hirohito, also known as the Showa era. -

Japan Industrial Training Association Magazine, nr. 182, 1970 Special Monographic on the 19th International Vocational Training Competition, Tokyo 1970. Page 7 includes stirring message given by Frederick Hill, the UK Official Representative of the IVTO to "the apprentices of Japan" at the 1970 competition in Tokyo. His words urges young people to build a better future, not repeat the mistakes of his generation who had prejudices and fought during the Second World War. He also stated that the "new world is yours to inherit." On page 7 is sticked the translation into English of Hill's words -
Chiba Prefecture brochure
The competition was held in the Chiba Prefecture and their Association for the Development of Industrial Skills produced a six page booklet about large industries in the region. -
Certificate of Crossing the North Pole
On the return flight from Tokyo to Amsterdam (via Copenhagen) Japan Airlines distributed a Certificate of Crossing the North Pole to all the team. This one is signed on the back by all the Irish competitors and officials. It has slight staining on the front that was caused during a house fire. -
