A photocopy of an article in the English national press by Ian Mackinnon. In the 'Home News' section. Coverage of the 1989 Competition in Birmingham. The article includes details on how the UK 'athletes' were prepared for the Competition. An issue in the men's hairdressing competition is described and there is coverage of the bricklaying and jewellery competitions. In jewellery the competitors worked behind bars due to the cost of the gold which was £2,000. -
Skill Olympics: is the starting pistol being held to our heads?
A photocopy of article in one of the English national newspapers (Financial News section). Written by Peter Large, Technology Editor in section entitle 'Frontiers of work. The article describes the 'run-up' to Birmingham hosting the 'Skill Olympics' at the National Exhibition Centre, in 1989. It is noted in the article that there are 'only 37 girls in the field, most in "feminine" jobs'. At this competition the UK pioneered two demonstration skills: information technology and computer-aided design. Half of the article puts the focus on 'IT Skills' development in the UK. -
